Introduction

Being a person who is passionate about surfing and who loves clothing, surf fashion is probably one of my favourite topics. So, what do surfers wear? The traditional surf style is laid-back, relaxed and casual. Think graphic tees, lightweight fabrics, flip flops, and sneakers. For women, high-waisted surf shorts, surf suits and spring wetsuits are also a thing.

In this post I’ll show you how to dress like a surfer by going through women’s surf fashion and men’s surf fashion, listing trending pieces from some of my favourite brands.

What do surfers wear: Women's surf fashion

1. Surf shorts

Lately I’ve seen many of my favourite surf influencers, like Josie Prendergast, Jules Cecilia, and Amy Timmerman, wearing high-waisted, snug surf shorts when surfing. I personally really like how they look and (hopefully) you won’t have to worry about them falling off when surfing unlike some bikini bottoms. I found some very nice pairs at Triangl and at Free People.

2. Surf suits

Surf suits come in various styles, including long sleeve, short sleeve, and two-piece options, among others.

I own a long sleeve, open-back surf suit with floral print from PAWO which I love and have gotten so many compliments for throughout the years of owning it. I would say the only downside to this style is that with the open back you risk getting an uneven tan. While none of my friends who bought the same surf suit as me got an ugly tan line, I was not as lucky as them. My tip if you want to surf in an open-back surf suit is to build up a base tan first and don’t wear it when you are still totally pale.

4. Spring wetsuits

Not only do they keep you warm and provide some level of protection from the sun- they’re also stylish. I own a classic, black spring wetsuit from Rip Curl, but spring wetsuits also come in a variety of vibrant colors and patterns.

5. Graphic tees, tank tops and sweaters

Graphic tees, tank tops and sweaters are a staple in surf fashion. They typically feature bold designs, vibrant colors, and catchy slogans that capture the laid-back, adventurous spirit of the surfing lifestyle. When it comes to graphic tees, tank tops and sweaters for surfers, I like the small brand Save Our Surf, founded by one of my favourite surf influencers Amy Timmerman

6. Flowy clothing

From breezy dresses to loose-fitting tops and lightweight skirts, they’re all favorites among many female surfers for their versatility and feminine flair. These breezy garments are perfect for throwing on over a swimsuit for a post-surf hangout or dressing up for a sunset beach bonfire. Their lightweight and breathable fabrics make them ideal for staying cool on hot summer days. One of my personal favourite brands for this type of clothing is Swing Cape Town.

7. Hats and beanies

Hats and beanies are essential accessories for surfers. Wide-brimmed hats are a staple in surf fashion. What I like about them is that some of them come with adjustable straps or chin cords to keep them secure in windy conditions, making them perfect not only to wear on the beach but also to surf with.

Beanies are a must-have for colder days when the water temperature drops. Cozy knit hats provide warmth and insulation, helping to keep you comfortable during chilly dawn patrols or winter swells.

8. Flip flops, sandals and sneakers

Flip flops and slip-in sandals are a go-to choice for surfers. Easily and quickly slip them on when you’re heading to the beach, running errands, or hanging out with friends.

Sneakers are another popular choice among surfers. There are countless brands and options out there. Right now, I’m a big fan of the Adidas Originals Handball Spezial sneakers, and will get my hands on a pair as soon as they are back in stock.

9. Jewelry

Whether you’re catching waves, lounging on the sand, or simply daydreaming about your next beach adventure, surf-inspired jewelry allows you to carry a piece of the sea with you wherever you go. Rope bracelets, wave pendants, shell necklaces, beaded jewelry, and pearls are classic surf jewelry pieces.

What do surfers wear: Men's surf fashion

1. Board shorts

Board shorts are a fundamental piece of attire for any surfer. They come in a wide range of colors, patterns, and designs to suit every surfer’s taste. They feature a loose, relaxed fit, allowing for unrestricted movement while surfing.

2. Graphic tees, tank tops and sweaters

Graphic tees, tank tops and sweaters are a staple in surf fashion. They typically feature bold designs, vibrant colors, and catchy slogans that capture the laid-back, adventurous spirit of the surfing lifestyle. However there are also more subtle, natural styles, tones and patterns available for those who prefer a more understated look.
