A beginner's guide - Lombok
Brief spot overview: Seger Reef is not the most beginner-friendly spot as it can get powerful and the reef is sharp. However, on smaller swells this spot works well for more advanced beginners. Here (from 03:50) you can see what surfing on the inside left (suitable for beginners) looks like on a smaller day.
What you’ll learn in this guide: This Seger Reef surf spot guide covers general spot info, wave characteristics, and the best surf conditions at Seger Reef.
The area
Surf spot name: Seger Reef
Geographical location: Seger Reef is about a 15 minute drive from Kuta Lombok where many tourists stay, so it’s one of the more accessible surf spots in Lombok.
You can paddle out directly from shore- there’s no need to take a boat out unlike at many other spots in Lombok. There are two main breaks here- the one suitable for beginners is on the left-hand side when facing the ocean from the beach, right next to a big rock.
Further to the right there’s a break suitable for more advanced surfers which mainly breaks to the right, but sometimes also to the left. Don’t go out here as a beginner.
What you need to know
Works for more advanced beginners on a smaller swell. The reason it's not suitable for complete beginners is due to the shallow and sharp reef, rocks and strong current that can occur on bigger swells. Complete beginners should instead try a sand bottom break, like Selong Belanak Beach.
Moderate
Ranges from 27°C to 30°C (81°F to 86°F) – a wetsuit is not needed, but I recommend that you wear a rashguard to protect yourself from getting rashes and irritated skin from the board if you surf on a foam board.
what the waves are like
Wave type: Reef break. It’s sharp and has sea urchins so you might want to consider wearing reef shoes.
Wave direction: There are two main breaks at Seger reef. The break to the left, close to the big rock, is suitable for beginners- this break has left-hand waves.
The spot to the right is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers and mainly breaks to the right, but sometimes also to the left (A-frame wave). The right’s tend to be more consistent but also fast-breaking and steeper, while the left’s are more mellow which is more suitable for intermediates.
When to surf
Basic facilities available
Seger Beach and its surrounding area is quite raw and natural. The beach has basic amenities, including a small parking area where you can park for a small fee, local warungs selling snacks and drinks, and basic toilets. There are no lifeguards, so be cautious and definitely consider surfing with a surf instructor as a beginner.
