A beginner's guide - Lombok
Brief spot overview: Pantai Rungkang is a sheltered reef break suitable for beginners, preferably those who have surfed a couple of times before. The area is remote and uncrowded, far away from the more touristy part of Lombok (Kuta). While it’s probably not worth the trip from Kuta just to surf this spot, it could be worth a visit if you plan to visit or are already in the area.
What you’ll learn in this guide: This guide covers general spot info, wave characteristics, and the best surf conditions at Pantai Rungkang.
The area
Surf spot name: Pantai Rungkang
Geographical location: Pantai Rungkang is located in East Lombok, near Ekas village. If you travel to Ekas from Kuta Lombok (where many tourists stay) you can either drive all the way which takes about 2 hours, or you can drive to Awang Harbor and take the boat from there.
The best way to reach the surf at Pantai Rungkang is by boat. Most surfers arrange a boat trip through local surf camps or accommodations in Ekas, which provide transport to the break based on the best tide and conditions. Some experienced surfers choose to paddle out, but this can be tiring, especially with currents. Booking a boat ensures an easier and safer experience, plus local guides can help you time the session for the best waves and tech you how to get out to the break if it’s your first time surfing here.
What you need to know
Works well for beginners. It can even work for complete beginners as the conditions are usually small, but I would rather recommend complete beginners to try a sand bottom break instead, like Selong Belanak Beach.
Low
Ranges from 27°C to 30°C (81°F to 86°F) – a wetsuit is not needed, but I recommend that you wear a rashguard to protect yourself from getting rashes and irritated skin from the board if you surf on a foam board.
what the waves are like

When to surf
Basic facilities available
Pantai Rungkang has minimal facilities, so surfers should come prepared. There are no lifeguards, surf shops, or direct beachfront restaurants, but nearby Ekas has a few eco-lodges, guesthouses, and local warungs. Surfboard rentals and lessons are limited, though some surf camps and schools in Ekas offer guided trips. Access is remote, with basic parking available, but most surfers rely on boat transport to reach the break.
