Brief spot overview: Ekas, on the southeastern coast of Lombok, is an off-the-beaten-path location. It’s rather undeveloped compared to Kuta, however it has become a popular surf destination with plenty of people in the water. It offers two main breaks- Ekas Inside is the break suitable for beginners.
What you’ll learn in this guide: This Ekas Inside surf spot guide covers general spot info, wave characteristics, and the best surf conditions at Ekas Inside to help you plan your surf sessions.
The area
Surf spot name: Ekas Inside
Geographical location: Ekas is located on the southeastern coast of Lombok, about a 2-hour drive from Kuta, Lombok where most tourists stay. The journey involves a mix of paved roads and dirt tracks, so a motorbike or a private driver is recommended. Many visitors also reach Ekas by boat from Awang Harbor. The area is still relatively undeveloped, adding to its off-the-beaten-path charm.
The surf spot in Ekas that is suitable for beginners is called Ekas Inside. Ekas Inside is accessible by boat from the beach.
What you need to know
Works well for beginners, although I don't recommend this spot to a complete beginner due to the reef bottom. Instead, try a sand bottom break, like Selong Belanak Beach.
Moderate to high. Despite the area being rather undeveloped, it has become a popular spot for surf schools to bring their students to.
Ranges from 27°C to 30°C (81°F to 86°F) – a wetsuit is not needed, but I recommend that you wear a rashguard to protect yourself from getting rashes and irritated skin from the board if you surf on a foam board.
what the waves are like
Wave type: Reef break
Wave direction: Both left and right (A-frame). The right’s tend to be fast-breaking and steeper, while the left’s are more mellow which is more suitable for beginners.
When to surf
Basic facilities available
Ekas is a remote surf destination, so amenities are limited. However, there are a few surf camps and resorts that offer accommodation, surfboard rentals, and lessons. Food options are basic, with small warungs serving traditional Indonesian meals.
