This lesson will introduce you to some of the best surfing destinations for beginners, to guide you on where to learn to surf by picking good beginner surf spots. While it may seem tempting to head to any beach and start surfing as a beginner, there are several important reasons why it’s advisable to choose the right location when learning to surf.
Not all beaches offer ideal conditions for beginners. Some surf spots have large, powerful waves that are more suited for experienced surfers. Surfing at an unsuitable location without knowledge of local conditions can put you at risk of accidents, injuries, and even drowning. Learning on smaller, gentler waves at beginner surf spots is recommended for beginners to build confidence and skills gradually.
Now, let’s explore some of the best beginner surf spots around the world!
Bali is famous for its consistent and beginner-friendly waves. It’s one of the world’s most popular beginner surf spots. The island’s surf schools and warm waters make it an excellent place to learn. I have visited Bali three times now and written a complete guide on surfing in Bali for beginners. You can find it here.
Lombok offers a more relaxed atmosphere than Bali and boasts some great beginner breaks, like Selong Belanak and Gerupuk. The island’s lush jungles, pristine beaches and clear waters add to the appeal. I have visited Lombok twice and I really love this island. I would definitely want to come back here! The only thing I think is a bit difficult here compared to Bali is transportation. If you don’t rent a scooter, getting transportation can be a bit tricky and expensive.
I recommend staying in Kuta as that is where you’ll find most beginner surf spots, nice restaurants and stores. During my last stay in Kuta, Lombok, I stayed at Tiu Oasis Lombok which I can highly recommend for groups of friends or couples.

New surfers can benefit from local surf schools that cater to beginners, ensuring a safe and enjoyable introduction to the exhilarating world of surfing in the iconic Jeffreys Bay.
When I went to Jefferys Bay I stayed at the Surf Lodge. This is a big house located just by an empty and calm beach. They offer very affordable stays and you’ll meet plenty of other surfers staying here.

It’s a very fresh and modern surf camp with nice rooms, beautiful views, a terrace with a pool, eating areas, and a bar. It was located close to the beach and some of the best restaurants and cafes in Santa Teresa.
A video I made from my stay at Lapoint Surf Camps in Costa Rica
Nosara, on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, is one of the best beginner surf spots in Costa Rica. Playa Guiones is a long sandy beach with consistent waves. This is a more quiet and chill town compared to many other surf towns in Costa Rica, so if you want to fully focus on surfing and relaxing, Nosara is a perfect fit.
During my stay in Nosara I stayed in a dorm room at Selina. The only downside with Selina is that’s it’s not located in the very central part of Nosara, but the rooms and facilities are very nice and lots of people stay here so that did not really bother me. They also have a super cute pig that lives here called Coco.
