A beginner's guide - BalI
Brief spot overview: Balangan Beach can be a challenging spot to surf at for beginners as the swell is often big, and due to the reef. But during the right conditions beginners can surf on the inside in the whitewater, and more advanced beginners can paddle out to the outside as long as it’s not too big.
What you’ll learn in this guide: This Balangan Beach surf spot guide covers general spot info, wave characteristics, and the best surf conditions at Balangan Beach to help you plan your surf.
The area
Surf spot name: Balangan Beach
Geographical location: Balangan Beach surf spot is situated in the Bukit Peninsula, about a 30 minute ride from the surf town Uluwatu. Unlike many other beaches in Uluwatu that are a bit more commercial, Balangan Beach is situated in a more rural and authentic area of Bali.
What you need to know
Best suited for experienced surfers, but during the right conditions beginners and intermediates can surf here. Complete beginners however should avoid it due to the reef. Try a beach break instead, like nearby Jimbaran Beach.
The crowd at Balangan Beach is moderate, and even on busy days, the beach is big enough that you can find your own spot.
Ranges from 27°C to 30°C (81°F to 86°F) – a wetsuit is not needed but I personally prefer wearing a spring suit.
what the waves are like
Wave type: Reef break with fast-breaking waves
Wave direction: Left
Wave size: Usually bigger waves that are suited for experienced surfers, but some days the waves are smaller and suitable for beginners and intermediates.
When to surf
Basic facilities available
Balangan Beach offers a laid-back and rural vibe with essential amenities like beachfront warungs for food and drinks, sunbeds and umbrellas for relaxing, and surfboard rentals with lessons for all levels.
There are basic guesthouses nearby if you want to stay close to the waves. Facilities like toilets and showers are available but simple, keeping the beach’s rustic charm intact.
Other activities
1. Golfing: Play a round of golf at the New Kuta Golf course, located nearby, with spectacular ocean views. In the picture you can spot the golf course on top of the cliff, just above the beach.
2. Day trip to Uluwatu: The surf town Uluwatu is just a 30 minute drive away from Balangan Beach. Visit Uluwatu for a more commercial experince- here you can visit markets and boutiques, eat at trendy cafés, enjoy sunsets and dancing at beach clubs, and try out the surf at other beginner surf spots.
3. Explore the cliffs: Hike up the cliffs for panoramic views, especially at sunset. It’s a favourite spot for photographers and romantic couples.
