Storing your wetsuit in the right way is an important part of caring for your wetsuit and extending its lifespan. Incorrect storage can lead to damage, requiring costly replacements sooner than expected. Learn best practices on how to store a wetsuit in this guide, so you can spend your money on things that are more fun than wetsuit replacements!
Between surf sessions you’ll want to store your wetsuit in a way that does not damage it. You might also have different wetsuits for different seasons, meaning you need to store them for a longer time which makes proper storage even more essential. The steps below outline how to store a wetsuit in a good way.
Before storing your wetsuit you should make sure it’s completely dry, both on the inside and the outside. This helps prevent the potential development of mould. If you’re unsure of how to dry your wetsuit in the right way to maximize its lifetime you can check out this article. It outlines the step-by-step process of how to dry wetsuits.
When you are sure that the wetsuit is completely dry, you can hang it right side out on a wide-shoulder plastic hanger. Hang it from the neck or shoulders. This is a good hanger made for storage of wetsuits, with shoulders wide enough to not destroy the neoprene.
You can also store the wetsuit laying flat if you have that spare space. For example you can lay it on a large shelf or in a large box under your bed. It has to be a space large enough to not have to fold any parts of the wetsuit. I even read in a community chat about a guy that stores his wetsuit laying flat under his mattress (not sure how good or recommended this option is to be honest), so I guess the only limitation is your imagination.
Avoid folding your wetsuit when storing it- neither fold it over a hanger nor store it folded in a cupboard or box. This can cause creases, which weaken the neoprene over time and lead to cracking or permanent deformities in the material. Not folding your wetsuit helps maintain the shape and prolongs the durability.
Lastly, you’ll want to store your wetsuit in a space that is cool and dry, with no direct sunlight. This protects it from UV light, heat damage, and the risk of mould developing- all of which are important parts of making it last longer. I store mine in my wardrobe.
