Lombok is (at least for now) a hidden gem for beginner surfers, although it is becoming more popular. It offers a range of beautiful beaches with gentle waves perfect for learning and honing your skills. In this post, I’ve complied a list of 6 great spots for beginner surfing i Lombok.
The beaches in Lombok feature pristine white and golden sands, stunning blue waters, and are beautifully framed by cliffs, mountains, and lush jungle landscapes
Here’s a comprehensive list of the best surf spots for beginner surfing in Lombok. Each of these spots offer something unique, making Lombok an amazing destination for beginner surfers.
While these spots are generally considered beginner-friendly, conditions can vary. Always check local surf reports and/or consult with local surf schools or instructors to ensure a safe and enjoyable surfing experience. Otherwise you risk going out when the waves are either disappointingly flat or dangerously large.
With its soft and small waves, Selong Belanak Beach is the best surf spot for beginner surfing in Lombok if you’re just starting out. This spot has a white sand beach with crystal clear waters, and the bottom is a forgiving sand bottom. You’ll be surfing close to the beach and the ride time will be rather short, but it’s a great opportunity to practice pop-ups.
Seger Reef is one of the closest surf spots to Kuta, which is a popular place to stay in Lombok. For beginners it works when the conditions are smaller. Aim to surf on the left-hand wave which has less current than the right-hand wave and is not appropriate for beginners. The ride tends to be fairly short but fun.
Tanjung Aan is another beginner-friendly surf spot in Lombok that works for beginners in smaller conditions. It’s a reef break with a beautiful white beach a blue waters, making it a dream spot to surf. You can either paddle out to the lineup or take a boat out.
Gerupuk village is probably the best central place for beginner surfing in Lombok. In Gerupuk you’ll find five different surf spots with reef bottom; Inside Right, Outside Right, Outside Left, Don Don, and Kids Point. Inside Right, Don Don, and Kids Point are suitable spots for beginners. All of these spots can be accessed by boat if you want to get out to the lineup and not stay by the beach where the whitewater is. Simply go to the beach and you’ll find plenty of boats ready to take you out for a surf session.
The Inside Right at Gerupuk is a right-hand break, meaning the waves mostly break to the right. This spot offers long rides and works on most days. This is a popular spot for beginner surfing in Lombok, so it can get crowded. I took a surfing lesson here with Dodo Surfing Lombok who got me some really great video drone footage while surfing.
Don Don is an A-frame reef break, meaning the waves break both to the left and to the right. This spot provides long rides, giving you ample time to practice your surfing (but also a longer paddle back to the lineup).
Kids Point needs a big swell to work, so it’s not as consistent as Inside Right and Don Don. This spot can sometimes be a good alternative when the swell at Inside Right and Don Don is too big. It’s a right-hand break, meaning the waves mostly break to the right.
Gerupuk bay has multiple surf spots, three of which are suitable for beginners; Inside Right, Don Don, and Kids Point
If you are staying in or close to Ekas, Pantai Rungkang Beach is a great choice for beginner surfing in Lombok. The water here is shallow, making it a good spot to practice your pop-ups and surfing without getting tired from paddling.
Ekas Inside needs some swell to work, however it’s yet a rather consistent wave that is suitable for beginners. The left-hand waves are suitable for beginners as they break more slowly and longer.
