The 11 best surf spots in Bali for beginners

Here’s a comprehensive list of the best surf spots in Bali for beginners. Each of these spots offer something unique, making Bali a fantastic destination for beginner surfers.

Tip: Always check local surf reports before you go surfing

While these spots are generally considered beginner-friendly, conditions can vary. Always check local surf reports and/or consult with local surf schools or instructors to ensure a safe and enjoyable surfing experience. Otherwise you risk going out when the waves are either disappointingly flat or dangerously large.

1. Medewi Beach in Medewi

Known for its long, mellow left-hand waves, the black-sand beach Medewi Beach is perfect for beginners looking to improve their skills. The gentle, rolling waves make it a great spot to practice longer rides.

2. Baby Reef in Sanur

This spot has long, small waves and usually low crowds. It can be accessed by boat from Mertasari Beach, where there are a couple of surf schools that can take you out with a boat taxi for a small fee. This is a protected spot where the waves usually stay small, even on larger days in Bali. Therefore, I like to go here when the conditions are too large in other areas in Bali.

3. Batu Bolong and Old Man's in Canggu

One of the most popular beginner spots in Bali is Batu Bolong. When the conditions are small, this reef break offers long, gentle waves that are perfect for practicing pop-ups and turns as you progress onto unbroken waves. I personally found this spot a bit challenging when I was a complete beginner, but it might just be because I did not surf when the conditions were beginner-friendly enough.

Old Man’s is a reef break that is located just next to Batu Bolong. Batu Bolong is better suited for beginners, however you can walk over to Old Man’s when you’re past the complete beginner stage and you’re ready for a bit more challenging waves.

4. Berawa Beach in Berawa

Berawa Beach is a mixed break, consisting of both reef bottom on the outside, and sand bottom on the inside. There are three different spots in the water to surf at: the Peak, the Ledge and the Bombie. For beginners, the Peak is the best spot and this is also the spot that has sand bottom.

5. Seminyak Beach in Seminyak

Seminyak Beach is a beach break well suited for beginners. During larger swells, just be aware of the rip current that might occur.

6. Legian Beach in Legian

Legian Beach offers easy waves that are ideal for beginners. The sandy bottom ensures a more safe environment for new surfers.

7. Kuta Beach in Kuta

Kuta Beach is one of the most famous and best surf spots in Bali for beginners. The long, sandy stretch offers consistent, gentle waves, perfect for learning the basics.

8. Jimbaran Beach in Kuta

Jimbaran Beach is a beach break that offers mellow waves that are perfect for beginners. The beach is also less crowded, making it a peaceful spot to practice. However, this spot is inconsistent and works only with the right conditions, so make sure you read the surf forecast before heading out here. Dry season (May to October) is usually best.

9. Thomas Beach in Uluwatu

Thomas Beach in Uluwatu is a hidden gem for beginner surfers. The beach is less crowded compared to other spots in Bali, providing a relaxed environment to practice. The sandy bottom and clear waters add to its appeal, but watch out for reef breaks further out.

10. Padang Padang Rights (Baby Padang) in Uluwatu

Often called “Baby Padang,” this reef break spot offers smaller, more manageable waves compared to the main Padang Padang break. It’s one of the best surf spots in Bali for beginners who want to get a taste of the Uluwatu area that truly has beautiful nature and crystal clear waters- in my opinion the most beautiful beaches I’ve seen in Bali. However, avoid surfing here during low tide or when the swell is too big.

11. Dreamland Beach in Uluwatu

Dreamland, which is a reef break, works for beginner surfers in the right conditions during smaller days. If you’re a beginner, aim to surf on the inside left near the A-frame.
